U is the streaming service of UKTV, which is operated by BBC Studios, the BBC’s commercial arm. It was called UKTV Play until July 2024, when the whole UKTV family was renamed under the single U brand. If you are looking for UKTV Play, this is it.
The service is free and funded by advertising. There is no premium tier, no annual plan and nothing to upgrade to.
That makes this page slightly unusual, so it is worth being direct about it: U costs you nothing, and StreamLocator is the only thing here you would pay for. You are paying for the way in, not for the programmes. What is on the other side is free, and stays free.
Seven channels, and this is the part most guides get wrong.
Four are free-to-air: U&Dave for modern comedy and factual, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday for history. Those are the ones people expect.
The other three are UKTV’s pay-television channels: U&Eden, U&Alibi and U&Gold. Their programming is on the free service too. That is the genuinely good part of U and it is buried on most pages about it. Three pay-TV channels’ output, on demand, at no cost.
Between them the seven cover British panel comedy, crime drama, natural history, archive sitcoms and a substantial slice of classic BBC material that UKTV holds the rights to.
This is the lightest sign-up of any British service. U asks for an email address and a UK postcode. It does not ask for a payment method, and unlike BBC iPlayer it does not ask you to declare a TV licence.

Since January 2026, UKTV and Channel 4 have had an arrangement that puts a large part of the U catalogue inside Channel 4’s streaming service. Thousands of hours of it, including a good deal of the comedy.
It is a genuine second route to much of the same programming, and it is also free. It is not a complete substitute, because not everything on U is in that deal, and Channel 4’s service is UK-only in exactly the same way U is, so it needs the same access.
If you already use Channel 4 you may find some of what you came here for is already sitting there.
Something worth knowing if you have got this far: U is one of five free British streaming services, and one StreamLocator subscription reaches all of them.
BBC iPlayer carries the BBC’s full output, live and on demand, and needs a TV licence declaration. ITVX has ITV’s drama and its sport. Channel 4 has its own catalogue plus the U material described above. Channel 5 rounds out the terrestrial set.
None of these is a route to U’s own channels, so they are not alternatives to this page. They are the rest of what you get once the access problem is solved once.
U can see roughly where in the world you are connecting from, and it only lets UK viewers in. From anywhere else the player refuses to start, whatever your account says.

This is also why an ordinary VPN often stops working.
