Does DStv Stream work abroad? What stops it, and what to watch instead

The 2026/27 Premier League season opens on Friday 21 August 2026, and there are 380 matches in it. If you pay for DStv Stream and you are not in South Africa when the whistle goes, you have a problem. A DStv Stream account bought in South Africa stops playing outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

There is a second problem, and it ends the conversation for most people. Registering for DStv Stream requires a South African mobile number, and there is no way around it. In practice that limits DStv to people who already had a South African number before they left.

So the answer splits in two, depending on whether you already hold an account. This guide covers what breaks, what DStv costs, and the route that gives you all 380 matches wherever you are. Our guide to where to watch the Premier League sets out every country's option.

All 380 Premier League matches, wherever you are

TOD carries all 380 Premier League matches in English, from about £7 a month, plus about £2 for StreamLocator.

Does DStv Stream work abroad?

No, not on its own. There are two separate reasons why.

The first is playback. A DStv Stream account bought in South Africa stops playing outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Take it to the UK, the United States or Canada and it stops. A two-week holiday breaks it the same way a permanent move does.

The second is registration, and it is the harder blocker. Signing up for DStv Stream requires a South African mobile number, and there is no way around it. Change your location all you like, the sign-up still asks for that number.

The location half is ordinary. Premier League rights are sold country by country. DStv holds them in South Africa, Sky and TNT Sports in the UK, Peacock, NBC and USA Network in the United States, Fubo in Canada, beIN and TOD across the Middle East and North Africa. Our guide to the cheapest way to watch the Premier League compares those routes on price.

A South African mobile number is not optional

If you are abroad and do not already hold an account, DStv is not a route to the Premier League. TOD is. It signs up with any international card, carries all 380 matches, and StreamLocator puts you in Jordan to reach it.

What DStv Stream carries and costs

Give DStv its due first. It bundles a lot of sport into one subscription: select Premier League matches, Serie A, La Liga and the Champions League, plus rugby, cricket and Formula 1 broadcasts. A South African and international film and TV library sits alongside it, and it includes all Showmax content. DStv carries competitions TOD does not.

The limit is the Premier League itself. DStv Stream carries select Premier League matches, not the full fixture list. If you are paying to follow one club, weigh that gap.

On price, DStv's packages start from about $30 a month, about £22 a month. Read that carefully. The $30 is the entry price for DStv's cheapest package, not the sports line-up above. The tier that carries the sport costs more.

If you already hold a DStv account

Your account has stopped playing since you moved, and location is your only blocker. StreamLocator offers South Africa as a location, so that part is solvable.

Even with location solved, the coverage question stays. DStv Stream gives you select Premier League matches. TOD gives you all 380. That is about £7 a month on TOD's annual plan against DStv from about $30 a month, about £22 a month.

If you are abroad and thinking about buying DStv

There is no usable answer here, and it is fairer to say so. Without a South African mobile number you cannot register, whatever happens to your location. People search for how to pay for DStv Stream from outside South Africa, but the blocker sits before payment. The question becomes which service will sell you the football.

DStv's $30 starting price is not its sports price

About $30 a month, about £22 a month, is the entry price for DStv's cheapest package. The full sports line-up sits above it, and costs more. TOD is about £7 a month for all 380 matches, plus about £2 for StreamLocator to reach it.

TOD carries all 380 matches, from about £7 a month

TOD is beIN Media Group's own streaming platform. It launched in January 2022 and operates in 24 countries across the Middle East and North Africa, with licensed rights in its region. Our full guide to TOD covers it in more detail.

For the Premier League, TOD carries all 380 matches, including every Saturday 3pm kick-off, with English commentary. beIN holds those regional rights through 2027/28, so 2026/27 is covered. La Liga is on the same subscription, and TOD also carries the Champions League and the Europa League in 2026/27.

The 3pm point matters most in the UK. UK broadcasters cannot show live football on Saturdays between 14:45 and 17:15, under UEFA Article 48. Sky Sports and TNT Sports show 267 of 380 between them, leaving around 110. Our 3pm blackout guide and our breakdown of how much Sky Sports costs cover the UK picture.

TOD's Standard plan is about £7 a month on the annual plan, or about £8 a month billed monthly. There is also a 4K Premium plan at a higher price.

TOD is licensed for the Middle East and North Africa, so reaching it from elsewhere means setting your streaming location. That is StreamLocator's job. StreamLocator runs its own connections, chosen and maintained for streaming. When a broadcaster blocks one, we move you onto another. Keeping those routes working is the whole job, not a side effect of a privacy product. It runs on smart TVs, consoles, streaming sticks, phones and browsers. Our guide to football streams and VPNs is the related read.

StreamLocator is a separate subscription and does not include TOD. On its two-year plan it works out at about £26 a year, roughly £2 a month, and the one-year plan is about £3 a month. Buy both and you pay about £9 a month across two separate subscriptions, £7 to TOD on its annual plan and £2 to StreamLocator on its two-year plan. That is about £106 a year.

One TOD limitation matters before you choose a device. TOD has no native app for Fire OS devices such as the Fire TV Stick. Fire Stick owners use a browser or cast instead.

StreamLocator has a free 7-day trial. Start one today and it ends on 20 August, the day before the season opens on 21 August, so it will not cover a match. It is long enough to check your devices first.

DStv Stream and TOD side by side

These two are not competing for the same job. DStv is a broad South African package with football inside it. TOD is a football subscription in another region. Put the Premier League at the centre, as our where to watch guide does, and they separate.

Route Price Premier League Remarques
TOD plus StreamLocator ⭐ About £9 a month, £7 to TOD on its annual plan and £2 to StreamLocator on its two-year plan. About £106 a year, which is about £80 to TOD and about £26 to StreamLocator. All 380 matches, including every Saturday 3pm kick-off, with English commentary Two separate subscriptions, not one package. No native app for Fire OS devices. La Liga included, plus the Champions League and Europa League in 2026/27.
DStv Stream From about $30 a month, about £22 a month, billed monthly Select Premier League matches, not the full fixture list That $30 is the entry package, not the sports tier. Registration needs a South African mobile number. Stops playing outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Carries Serie A and all Showmax content.

If you want the full fixture list, TOD answers it and DStv does not. If you want Serie A, a South African film and TV library and Showmax on one bill, DStv is the stronger package. For an expat who already pays for DStv, the football gap is a reason to add TOD, not to drop DStv. What DStv cannot be, without a South African mobile number, is a starting point.

Readers also ask how Peacock compares with DStv Stream. Peacock carries the Premier League in the United States, alongside NBC and USA Network. Our guide to Peacock abroad covers its conditions from outside the US.

Sometimes you need nothing from us. In South Africa or elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, buy DStv directly. In the United States, buy Peacock directly. In Canada, Fubo holds exclusive rights and carries all 380 matches in 4K, so buy Fubo directly. StreamLocator is for people outside the country that sells the service they want.

On terms of service, be clear-eyed. Using a location tool is not illegal. It may sit outside a given service's terms, and that is a judgement each reader makes. You still pay the broadcaster for its content. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does DStv Stream work abroad?

No, not once you leave its region. A DStv Stream account bought in South Africa stops playing outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Registering for DStv Stream also requires a South African mobile number, and there is no way around it.

Can I use DStv Stream on holiday outside South Africa?

Not once you are outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. A fortnight away breaks playback the same way a permanent move does.

Can I watch the Premier League on DStv Stream in the USA, the UK or Canada?

Not on a DStv Stream account. It stops playing outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Peacock, NBC and USA Network carry the Premier League in the United States. Sky and TNT Sports sell it in the UK. In Canada, Fubo carries all 380 matches in 4K.

What is the best DStv Stream plan for the Premier League abroad?

None of them gets you the full fixture list. DStv Stream carries select Premier League matches rather than all 380, so the plan does not change the coverage gap. DStv's packages start from about $30 a month, about £22 a month, and that entry price is not the sports tier. TOD has every match at about £7 a month on its annual plan.

Do I need StreamLocator if I live in South Africa?

No. DStv sells the Premier League in South Africa, so buy it directly. StreamLocator is for people outside the country that sells the service they want.

Final thoughts

DStv Stream does not work abroad, and the second blocker matters more than the first. Playback stopping outside South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa is the familiar half. Needing a South African mobile number to register is the half that closes the door.

If you already hold DStv, it is a broad package worth keeping, though it carries select Premier League matches rather than the full list. If you want every fixture, TOD has all 380 with English commentary. It costs about £9 a month across two separate subscriptions, £7 to TOD on its annual plan and £2 to StreamLocator on its two-year plan. Start the free 7-day trial now and you have time to get your devices working before 21 August.
